I also teach Spanish in Montessori nurseries, introducing young children to the language through a fun and engaging combination of songs, dancing, actions, puppets, stories, games and music.
We learn everyday language such as greetings, numbers and colours, as well as topics including animals, pets, transport and food. I use familiar songs that children already know in English, such as The Wheels on the Bus, If You’re Happy and You Know It, Incy Wincy Spider and Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, introducing them in Spanish so that children can easily join in and learn through repetition.
I also use flashcards, colourful scarves, finger puppets and other props to reinforce vocabulary and encourage participation. The children particularly love my puppets Lola and Juan, as well as Tommy, who features in the Me llamo song. Music and movement are a big part of the sessions, and the children quickly learn and remember the dance moves.
Through this playful and interactive approach, children become familiar with Spanish from an early age and begin to develop a natural enjoyment of the language.
